Those of us with years of experience fitting windows know that expired silicone will not cure and that a mess is created as a result. Silicone decays over time and
reduces energy efficiency. Put simple, it’s shelf life is limited. Installation using silicone takes longer and is inefficient. When installing windows and doors on a
rainy day silicone products cannot be guaranteed to seal properly. Water gets into reveals, silicone goes on top and doesn’t bond – what happens then is that air
leakage and damp occurs. This becomes obvious a few months after installation when the nightmare scenario is that your window expands and contracts in sun and the
poorly installed window gets pulled away from the wall.
Silicone has no acoustic sound properties. This means that if we order an acoustic window and the decibel reading is lowered (to 39 db) using acoustic glass and we
then proceed to install with silicone the sound travels through the reveal and the window acoustics are rendered obsolete. In this case inefficient installation has
ultimately let down the window. Unlike Silcone, trio tape has an acoustic value of 6odb. Silicone has zero and has no ‘a’ rating – for this reason we cannot
efficiently install sound proof windows with silicone.
At Branco Windows and Doors we use trio tape at all times when installing our windows ensuring an ‘A’ rating and a performance to match.
